John Tsiavis is a celebrated commercial portrait photographer. His unique ability to seamlessly blend conventional portraiture with art and fashion has resulted in the creation of many iconic images that have forged their way into contemporary Australian culture.
With a variety of clients from entertainment, lifestyle, advertising and editorial, while also expanding into new personal projects, his artwork is now appearing in collections throughout Australia and abroad. The Australian National Portrait Gallery has acquired four of John’s works for their permanent collection. He has been shortlisted for the National Portrait Prize, Head On Prize and was a finalist for the prestigious Olive Cotton Award for photographic portraiture.
“The portrait photography of John Tsiavis is characterized by a tough clarity of intent and subtle sophistication of expression. His portraits of sitters as diverse as actor Chris Lilley and writer Christos Tsiolkas in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery are compelling precisely for the complexity of human identity they convey.”
